#### Jorgen Amundsen: from a family of shipowners, captains and Polar explorers

Captain Jorgen Henrik Waldemar Amundsen was born on December 24, 1850, in Hornes, Skjeberg (now Sarpsborg), Østfold County, Norway, into a family of shipowners and captains. 

His first cousin, once removed, was the famous Norwegian explorer [Roald Amundsen](https://arcticportal.org/the-arctic-portlet/expeditions/roald-amundsen), who led the first successful expedition to reach the South Pole in 1911. Jorgen’s grandfather, [Amund Olsen Utgard](https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/landscape/2Z3Y-5XQ), was Roald’s great-grandfather.

#### Sunk by German submarines - twice

Six years later, during World War I, in 1917, Jorgen Amundsen was the captain of the SV *Natuna*, a three-masted iron barque. They embarked on a voyage from Savannah, Georgia, USA, to Odense, Denmark, carrying a cargo of cotton seed oilcake. Despite receiving a telegram warning of German U-boat dangers in the area, the ship continued its course north of the Shetland Islands. 

On the evening of May 2nd, Natuna was shelled and sunk by the German submarine *U-44* (Paul Wagenführ), approximately 70 nautical miles northwest of Shetland. The captain and crew managed to escape in two lifeboats. One lifeboat drifted south and reached Aberdeen a few days later. The second lifeboat, skillfully navigated by Captain Amundsen, rowed to safety, landing in Shetland around 2 a.m. There was no loss of life.  

This was not the first time Jorgen Amundsen had been sunk by German submarines. In 1915, he was captain of MV Oscar, which was shelled and sunk by the German submarine *U-38* (Max Valentiner), southwest of Lindesnaes. There was no loss of life. 

#### MV *Jorgen Amundsen*

Fast forward to 2023, and a vessel named MV Jorgen Amundsen arrives in Lerwick, Shetland Islands, en route to the Arctic. This vessel, a converted Norwegian lifeboat built in 1966 for the Norwegian Redningsselskapet, was named and funded by the descendants of Captain Amundsen. During her 31 years of service, the RS Jorgen Amundsen assisted 1,032 vessels at sea and saved 70 lives. 

Originally constructed as an ocean-going tug, the MV Jorgen Amundsen has 13 sister ships, several of which were frequent visitors to the Shetland Islands from the 1960s through the 1980s.

#### Honouring a rich maritime history

Over the years, the vessel has had various names and uses. However, when we acquired her in 2020, we restored her original name to honour her rich maritime history. 

Jorgen Amundsen passed away on March 5, 1940, in Fredrikstad at the age of 89. The photograph above currently hangs in the crew quarters on board. It was taken in 1937, when Jorgen Amundsen was aged 87.

We are venturing into deeper waters with the development of our ROV Assistant, an innovative tool designed to enhance underwater ROV exploration. This assistant probe is engineered to hover above the ROV, providing precise positioning, a comprehensive top view, and enhanced floodlighting. Equipped with advanced AI analytics capabilities, it can process data from both the ROV camera and the top-view cameras in real-time. This data is transmitted through the umbilical cord to the control station, delivering valuable analytics and facilitating seamless communication between the ROV and the surface control console.

#### Problems to solve

**Visibility**  
When navigating an ROV below 30-40 meters, or even less, lighting conditions become poor. Debris easily reflects back from the ROV headlights, making the line of sight short, and the target might not be visible before reaching a couple of meters from the target. The more angle you provide between the light and the camera, the further you can see, and the reflection of debris is minimized.

The ROV assistant will provide a 360° top floodlight, lighting up the work area from a different angle than the ROV headlights. This will light up the work area from above and provide a much safer operational area for the ROV.

**Navigation/positioning**  
GPS does not work below the surface; an acoustic positioning device must be used in order to provide location data to the ROV. When navigating without a positioning device, currents and low visibility make it a challenging task to reach the required destination.

The reasonably heavy-weighted ROV assistant will be attached by a wire ship containing a GPS position device. The angle of the wire will provide a close to accurate position of the ROV assistant. Extending the ROV position with lasers can even provide accurate positions all the way to the seabed.

**Stuck umbilical cable**  
When operating an ROV, video signals must travel through an umbilical cable. Wireless signals do not easily transfer through water. This umbilical cable can get stuck in the surrounding environment.  

While operating the ROV on a shorter umbilical cable attached to the ROV assistant, the top view camera will have a full overview of the umbilical cable and ensure safe navigation between obstacles.

**High-resolution cameras**  
A wide-angle camera in combination with a tele lens camera allows the ROV assistant to have an overview and a capability to focus on details further away.

**Shape recognition and object counting**  
The AI processor allows for a wide range of AI models to be used. Shape recognition can alert when a top view is needed and when top view requires attention. Object or specimen counting can assist scientists in getting an overview of colonies and their growth rate. The AI real-time capabilities also operate on the video stream from the ROV camera for up-close investigations and can provide real-time information, on screen, up to the surface operator.

### Modular design

The idea is to create modular compartments where the design and parts can be reused for other purposes. The further plan is to extend the ROV assistant with its own propulsion module so it can more accurately position itself above targets, sonar scan areas, and go off on its own exploration missions. Another project in progress is to allow it to operate water sampling modules and a bottom sediment sample module to collect scientific data.

Lidar works by emitting laser pulses towards a target and measuring the time it takes for the pulses to return after reflecting off the surface. The system then calculates the distance based on the speed of light. A typical Lidar system consists of a laser source, a scanner, a photodetector, and a GPS unit. The laser source emits the pulses, the scanner directs them towards the target, the photodetector captures the reflected pulses, and the GPS unit provides precise location data.

Our AI-powered Intelligent Sinker Probe features a modular design, allowing for full customisation depending on your project requirements. 

The unit is designed to be easily deployed by hand from a vessel, sink to the seabed, perform its tasks and then surface for easy retrieval, without the need for expensive research ships or complicated machinery.

A mechanical water sampler is triggered to suck water into a replaceable container at a pre-configured depth or depths.

Our research ship, the MV _Jorgen Amundsen_ is an optimized platform for initiating monitoring projects. 

We have the capability to deploy 5-10 simultaneous probes at several locations per day. This can be initiated on a weekly or monthly basis in areas near our location. 

Our project model includes establishing the initial data, assisting in locating alternative deployment vessels and service personnel, such as local fishing vessels or similar entities already operating in the area, and training them in the simple process of operating and servicing the probes.

**Remote Operations**

We are also available to organize the project management of initiating operations solely with local vessels if the MV _Jorgen Amundsen_ is tasked elsewhere.

Icebergs, lost containers, and fishing creel markers/buoys pose significant dangers, especially when ropes can get stuck in the propeller. Detecting these objects and providing clear warnings is crucial for safe navigation. High-quality cameras with AI analytics can recognize the bright colors of buoys and continuously monitor for potential hazards. 

We are exploring the integration of thermal imaging and lidar to further detect dangers lurking on the surface

**Man overboard**  
Spotting a man overboard is an urgent matter. The quicker areas can be scanned, or the larger the area of search that can be covered, the more lives can be saved.

We are investigating the use of thermal imaging to sweep for heat signals and developing a specific man overboard mode for the assistant to enhance search and rescue operations.

**Alarm for dangers**  
While there are already existing alarms for collision courses, such as radar and AIS targets, enhancing the intelligence of these systems increases the possibility of operating safely.

We aim to have the ship assistant suggest approaches to observed dangers, enhancing decision-making and safety.

At this stage, we have successfully implemented a comprehensive test setup that fully integrates with all the vessel's sensors, including AIS, environmental sensors, and GPS navigation. Our onboard geo-database and geoserver are equipped to manage geographic data to be analyzed and presented on the map, such as the locations of shipwrecks, buoys, lighthouses, and other points of interest. The onboard network is fully equipped with the necessary resources to begin training the onboard assistant for intelligent interactions. However, our immediate focus is on establishing foundational rules and ensuring that all systems operate as expected

Currently, the onboard ship assistant operates using a combination of a full server rack and powerful workstation PCs. 

Two high-resolution touchscreens have been installed to display visual information. Two [AI dongles](/ai-network-dongle/) are implemented as test stations to verify new features can run seamlessly, Joystick controllers, switches and buttons are available to for quick interaction and manual control for sensors and camera movements.

MV *Jørgen Amundsen* is a vessel with a rich maritime legacy. 

Built in 1966 in Tjørvåg, Norway, she served until 1997 as a lifeboat in the Norwegian rescue service; during this time, she assisted 1,032 vessels and saved 70 lives.

After much work, MV *Jorgen Amundsen* has now been transformed into a cutting-edge survey vessel, perfectly equipped to support small teams of scientists on a wide range of expeditions.
